About Gary Fenton
Gary
Fenton is the senior pastor of a 7,500-member Dawson Family of Faith in
Birmingham, Ala. He received a B.A. from Southern Nazarene University
and a master of divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological
Seminary. Fenton went on to receive a doctor of ministry at Midwestern
Baptist Theological Seminary. Prior to moving to Alabama, Fenton served
as the senior pastor of churches in Texas, Oklahoma and Missouri. Each
week Fenton addresses thousands in central Alabama through a weekly
telecast on CBS 42.
Fenton's story-telling style of speaking and writing have made him a frequent speaker on the subject of leadership. In addition, he also serves as adjunct professor at Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham teaching graduate courses in Leadership, Church Finance and Church Administration. In 2002 Fenton graduated from Leadership Birmingham, and is currently participating in Leadership Alabama
As a frequent contributor to Leadership Journal, his articles have been used in Leadership classes in several seminaries and graduate schools. Fenton also wrote Good for Goodness' Sake (New Hope, 2006), Your Ministry's Next Chapter (Bethany House, 1999) and co-authored Mastering Church Finances (Multnomah Publishers, 1992).
While attempts to build character are usually directed to the young or occasionally to young adults explaining how as young parents they can pass on character to their children, Fenton's passion is helping adults develop authentic character. During life's first 40 years, character is often pursued as means to the ends of possessions and power. But between ages of 35 to 55 the target of life moves from material success to spiritual significance. Fenton is interested in helping adults finding the path that leads to character. It's far greater to have character than be known as a character.
